How to Check Car Oil

Chevrolet Certified Service and Oil Change

Did you know motor oil is considered the lifeblood of your vehicle? It’s crucial that there’s the right amount of oil at all times to protect the engine’s internal moving parts. Visit the service center at Bowman Chevy in Clarkston to learn more about the importance of your car’s oil.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

New vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t use the dipsticks most people are used to, so begin by looking at your owner’s manual for recommendations.

If you are checking the oil manually, follow these steps:

  • Park your vehicle on level ground and make sure the engine is turned off but warm – drive it a bit first.
  • Open the vehicle’s hood and locate the dipstick.
  • Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  • Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and check the level.

Dipsticks will have a way of showing the correct oil level. If the top of your oil streak is between the two marks or within a cross-hatched area, you’re good. If not, you need more oil.

Refer to the owner’s manual about which oil grade to purchase, then remove the oil filler cap, and add oil a little at a time until you’ve reached the correct level.

Strange Car Noises

Mechanics repairing strange noise in car
If you’re used to the peace and quiet of your morning commute, then strange car noises are an alarming development. And while car grinding and squealing noises might send you into a panic, it’s important to take a moment to listen closely. These strange car noises can be a huge clue while diagnosing problems under the hood. From frayed belts to worn brakes to tire troubles, we’ve assembled a brief guide to point you in the right direction.

Squeaks and Squeals

Notice a high-pitched sound coming from the vehicle? These squeaks and squeals can indicate several problems, so pay attention to when you notice the noise.

  • Belts: If you hear a squeal when you shut down the engine, then your belt may be damaged. You might need a replacement or just a simple readjustment.
  • Brakes: Squealing brakes indicate overly worn brake pads. Be sure to stick to your scheduled maintenance to ensure that your brakes stay in top condition.
  • Bearings: If you hear a whining sound during corners, your wheel bearings may need some work. A fresh set can bring the life back into your vehicle.

Car Grinding and Rumbles

A high-pitched squeal is hard to miss, but sometimes strange car noises are a bit more subtle. See if any of these noises sound familiar!

  • Exhaust and Muffler: Notice a rumble toward the back of the car? This is often an issue with your exhaust system, but it could be the catalytic converter. Best to schedule an appointment to get your car on a hoist immediately!
  • Suspension System: If your car lets out a clunk when you hit a speed bump, it’s time to get that suspension system in line. It might be an issue with the shock absorbers.
  • Tires and Wheels: A rhythmic ticking might mean your tires and wheels need some work. The issue could be anything from low air pressure to an unbalanced set.

Tire Tread Coin Test

RhondaIts almost summer and time to plan that vacation!

If you are planning a road trip, don’t overlook getting your car ready too. Here are some simple “self maintenance” tips (thanks to our friends at Tirerack.com) you can do to keep you car in great condition.

Tire Tread Coin Test

Check the tread on your tires with this simple test:

penny-tire-thread-check-614x345Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Lincoln’s head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32″ of tread depth remaining.

Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32″ of tread depth remaining.

According to most states’ laws, tires are legally worn out when they have worn down to 2/32″ of remaining tread depth. So keep an eye on your tires and make sure you have them rotated.

Check your fluids: brake, coolant and transmission to make sure they are at the right level and there is no discoloration. Fluids break down and evaporate over time. Keeping these fluids at proper levels and fresh will keep your car running with optimal performance.

Oil Check

Check your oil every other time you fill up. Did you know your car may be using too much oil? That overuse will not necessarily be indicated on your instrumental panel. Most of those indicators do not monitor levels, just the timing of your oil life. The best bet is to just take a look for yourself. If you would like we’d be happy to show you how… just stop by the service department.

These 3 simple steps are things you can do at home and will help you avoid unnecessary expenses and keep your vehicle in great running condition. Hope you have a great summer!
