Classic Chevys: The Legacy of Chevrolet

chevy-suburban-historyInnovation and the pursuit of performance are intertwined throughout the 100+ years that Chevrolet has been in existence. Bowman Chevrolet in Clarkston is proud to be a part of that legacy. We’re taking a trip down memory lane to recall some of our favorite Chevrolet models throughout the decades that helped define the Chevy brand for Waterford and Detroit drivers.

1930’s: The 1936 Chevrolet Suburban

The granddaddy of the modern-day SUV, the truck-based, steel-bodied Chevy Suburban “Carryall” was introduced in mid-1935 as a beefier alternative to the station wagons of the day. The 1936 Suburban could carry up to 8 passengers, plus all of their gear while traversing the nation in search of adventure. For 80 years now, the Suburban legacy has lived on, becoming the longest-lived continuous production automotive nameplate in the country.

The 1940’s: The 1948 Chevrolet Pickup

Introduced after World War II, the Advance Design trucks Chevy produced in 1948 offered new roomier cabs with three-across seating, making it an ideal choice for families considering a second vehicle. The iconic Chevy truck remains cherished by collectors to this day, and the Chevy truck driveline hasn’t needed much tweaking since.

The 1950’s: The 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe

The history-making Bel Air Sport Coupe arrived on the scene and re-energized the Chevy brand as America’s cultural roots began to shift with the introduction of rock ‘n’ roll. The two-toned 1955 Chevy boasted a “Turbo-Fire” V8, the very first of Chevy’s legendary small-block engines. The Bel Air was dubbed “The Hot One” in reference both to the powerful performance of the V8, and to the record-breaking rate of sales for the Bel Air Sport Coupe.

The 1960’s: The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray “Split-Window” Coupe

The birth of the Corvette Stingray. The Chevy Corvette had already been earning respect around the globe for its exceptional performance, but in 1963 the superbly tailored form of the Stingray made its debut. It offered American drivers a fuel-injected small-block V8 that was potently powerful, as well as an independent rear suspension; the affordable price point put the Split Window Coupe within reach for performance enthusiasts across the nation.

THE AWARD-WINNING 2016 CHEVY EQUINOX

2016-chevy-equinoxWhat sets a Chevrolet vehicle apart from the rest? A relentless dedication to quality engineering and timeless design. Maybe that’s why our vehicles have earned more 2016 J.D. Power Initial Quality and Dependability awards than any other brand on the market. In this long line of excellent craftsmanship, the 2016 Chevy Equinox stands tall and proud, boasting accolades like “Most Dependable Compact SUV” and “Highest Ranked Compact SUV in Initial Quality in a tie, Two Years in a Row” from J.D. Power this year. With awards like these, it’s no wonder the Equinox has been such a hit with families across Waterford, Clarkston, and Detroit. But what’s the Equinox done to earn such praise from consumers and industry professionals alike.
Quite simply, the 2016 Chevy Equinox is one of the most versatile and efficient SUVs you’ll find on the roads. Its cabin is warm and spacious, with 39.9 inches of legroom for your rear seat passengers to stretch out in, and 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space (with the seats folded down) to carry equipment and luggage. And it offers a multitude of high-tech amenities, like 4G LTE Wi-Fi and Siri Eyes Free Capability.
But the real star of the show here is the advanced and comprehensive set of safety systems in the Equinox. A wide range of accident prevention technologies are offered with the Equinox, including:
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Forward Collision Alert
And if a collision does occur, you and your family will be protected by the six standard air bags that come with the vehicle.

THE CHEVROLET CORVETTE: A NATIONAL TREASURE BORN IN THE MIDWEST

yellow-corvetteOften referred to as “America’s sports car,” the Chevrolet Corvette is a bonafide classic, which is why we here at Bowman Chevrolet are proud to be your #1 source for everything Corvette. To be a part of the Corvette legacy is an honor. You may not know that the very first Corvette actually came off the assembly line in nearby Flint almost 70 years ago. Thus, we are so excited to be bringing this piece of American history, born right here in Michigan, to the greater Clarkston, Waterford, and Detroit region.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

First introduced as a “dream car” at the 1953 Motorama show in New York’s luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel, the Corvette quickly became a top name for both its class and craftsmanship, and as such the first 300 cars assembled in Flint were all built by hand. Since its introduction, the Corvette has undergone a multitude of facelifts, both big and small:
  • Chevrolet experimented with exposed and pop-up headlights
  • They moved from fiberglass to an aluminum body
  • Introduced the now-iconic hood and fender vents, along with the removable T-top roof panels (Chevy being the first company to make this available)
What has remained constant is the integrity and reliability of this American sports car staple. This is what has made the Corvette the world’s longest-running, continuously produced passenger car. Regardless of the year, it’s no overstatement to say that the Corvette is one of the most instantly-recognizable cars to ever be produced.

MEET THE NEXT GENERATION

The 2016 Corvette continues the long tradition of innovation that Chevy set into motion all those years ago. On top of the sharp look of the Corvette we’ve all come to know and love (from the classic, sporty exterior to interior touches such as a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel), the 2016 model includes cutting-edge modern conveniences like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, power-closing trunk, and available front-view parking cameras.

JOIN THE LEGACY

All of these are reason enough to ask yourself, “What have I been waiting for all this time?” Schedule a test drive of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette today at Bowman Chevrolet, and become a part of this illustrious American tradition.

BEST AUTUMN ROAD TRIP DESTINATIONS NEAR DETROIT, CLARKSTON, AND WATERFORD

forestIf you’re dying to hit the road this fall to see the sights and take in some fall colors, then check out some of these local road trip destinations. Whether you’re looking to stay close to Detroit and Waterford, or you’re willing to drive a bit, there are plenty of don’t-miss trips in the area. Here are a few of our favorite road trip spots in the Michigan area.

POINT PELEE NATIONAL PARK

It’s right across the border into Canada, and it’s one of the best places to enjoy some fun by Lake Erie. It’s about an hour drive, and a great place to witness the fall migration of some remarkable bird species. Plus from August to mid-October, Monarch butterflies migrate across Ontario, often stopping to rest in Point Pelee before they cross Lake Erie as they travel south for the winter.

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN

Drive across the state to Kalamazoo and enjoy both scenery and a vibrant community. Kalamazoo is about two hours west of Detroit, and there is a stellar beer scene in this little college town, including Bell’s Brewery, Arcadia Brewing Company, and Kalamazoo Beer Exchange.

CUYAHOGA NATIONAL PARK

You’ll have to drive to Ohio, but it’s only a couple of hours to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Forests, rolling hills, and amazing fall colors are all attractions at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. There are multiple trail options, and one advantage of heading south is that you can enjoy the fall colors later in the season; early to late October is prime time for observing the turning trees.

TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN

All the way up at the northern end of the state you’ll find Traverse City; it would be hard to imagine a better time to visit this lakeside city than during the autumn season. You can enjoy a stroll on the beach, take in some small town shopping, or even enjoy a wine tasting in Michigan’s wine country. There’s also championship golf course and, well, brilliant fall colors that start to turn in late September. It’s a four hour drive from Detroit, but it’s worth it.
